The Appalachian Mountains are rich with coal, and they are in grave danger. Strip mining is an ever growing industry. It is spreading like wildfire through these mountains. Mining companies are literally blasting away hundreds of mountain tops in order to reach the coal veins. Over 500 mountains so far have been destroyed! If this problem does not stop, this beautiful place filled with natural wonders will cease to exist. A lot of people don’t realize what serious danger the Appalachians are in.

The Appalachians are some of the oldest mountains in the United States; it is also one of the most biologically diverse regions. It is undeniably a land filled with beauty. In these mountains you’ll find towering waterfalls, huge cliff lines, dense evergreen forests and clear cascading streams. Life here is abundant. There are many living things that thrive only here.

The strip mining industry is ripping our environment apart. Basically, the ridge or summit of the mountain is “altered”, to reach the coal veins inside. Coal forms in multiple layers throughout the mountain. Miners often blast several times to reach over a dozen seams on a single mountain. This increases the depth of the mine each time, this can result in a vertical descent hundreds of extra feet into the mountains. Blasting can cause up to 1,500 feet of elevation loss. This industry is destroying habitat for many plants and animals. Even though, by law, the industry is supposed to “reclaim” the land,… by creating places for homes, animal habitat, and flat land…. this rarely happens. Once all the mountaintop removal process is over, the land is barren. It’s common for them to import cover plants and grasses (not native to the US), because they are hearty enough to quickly grow on the compacted rock soil that’s left after . The soil in on these mines are no longer fertile, and even when reforestation is attempted, it’s nearly impossible to get plants to thrive once again. The land is no where near as beneficial after mountaintop removal as it was originally. The mountain has been altered forever, and will never be the same.

The effect this type of mining has on the people, is even worse than that which it has on the environment. The chances for getting cancer is twice as high in strip mining areas, as compared to non mining areas. Rates of mortality, chronic pulmonary disorders, hypertension, lung cancer, as well as heart, lung, and kidney disease are greatly increased in mountaintop removal zones. Blasting expels potentially hazardous rocks and toxic dust into the air. It’s a common procedure to simply push excess debris over the mountainside. This eventually reaches our creeks and streams, which leads to the rivers, which leads to our faucets. Our water is contaminated. If the mountains aren’t healthy, the people are not healthy.

This is an industry grounded on greed. Money is at the root of all this destruction. The common people here, are the ones who suffer from this mining. Mountaintop removal was created to be more cost efficient for the mining companies. It requires less workers, which is in reality taking jobs from our people. In Kentucky, the number of mining workers has decreased over 60% from 1979 to 2006. Overall, the industry has ended 10,00 jobs, from 1990 to 1997. With statistics like that, it’s obvious this region is not economically sound, based off coal. The big industry is reaping the benefits from our land, while the common man has to suffer great risks to health, and economic struggle.

“Coal keeps the lights on”. Sure, coal is the source of our electricity…. but this isn’t our choice. It is simply the only affordable option we are given. There are clean energy sources, but these industries want to take everything they can from the land, before we can tap into these better options.

I’ve spent the last 5 years of my life studying what these mountains contain. I venture deep in the wild, to places untouched, and seldom seen. I strive to share my experiences, and the amazing places I’ve seen with others… so that they too can gain an appreciation for the wild of Appalachia. This place is, in my opinion, so overlooked. It’s unlike anywhere else in the world. Our amazing natural land is something we should be proud and thankful for, something we strive to protect. These mountains are our home, our history, our livelihood.

We need to STAND UP! It’s time for change. This iis not a one person mission, it is a task requiring many. Every voice counts! Let everyone know were are sick of sacrificing our mountains. Demand access to clean energy, and water. Put a stop to this outrageous destruction! END MOUTAINTOP REMOVAL!

Join the fight, and help me stand up against mountaintop removal! I’m working on making a website, and petition, but for now, please follow my anti strip mining blog, Redeem the Mountains

and, like Redeem the Mountains facebook page!

These mountains are my greatest passion, and I need your support in saving them! (:
